Our Top Tips on Downsizing As Seen In Apartment Therapy!
Spring cleaning season is officially upon us and there's no better time than the present to get rid of all that extra stuff. I recently posted about all the things I learned while living on the road for 366 days, and my biggest takeaway is this: YOU HAVE TOO MUCH STUFF.
One thing I get asked quite often is whether or not it was hard to part with our clothing, shoes, furniture, dishes, so on and so on. The truth is it wasn't hard at all; not even for a second. I know that sounds ridiculous, but when you don't have an option -- and at 120-square-feet we did NOT have an option -- you don't spend a lot of time thinking about whether you miss that lamp or those shoes.
In truth, it was incredibly liberating to say goodbye to so much stuff. We felt happier, freer and better about our lives.
Re-acquiring things after our trip, now that was the hard part. I actually got a little anxiety thinking about end tables and rugs and charis. Thankfully, we didn't have to buy a thing! By the time we pulled our few precious furniture items out of storage and graciously accepted all the furniture our parents / grandparents didn't want, we had a full house again. Our queen size bed was the only thing we actually bought!
So stop worrying about how to downsize and give it a go already. Plus there's no better place to start than by reading our advice in this Apartment Therapy round-up. Enjoy + happy downsizing!
